Kiao-Chao (Kiautschou)
Kiautschou was a territory in the southern part of the Chinese Shandong peninsula that was leased to the German Empire in 1898. After its garrison capitulated in 1914, it fell to Japan. Its capital was Qingdao, formerly called Tsingtau. The 5 Cent and 10 Cent coins were minted in Berlin. The reason for minting only smaller denominations was the fact that even in the early 20th century the Mexican dollar was still a favoured currency in large parts of Asia.
